Pregnant with no bump

Supermodels don't get pregnant, according to London Fog.

Giselle Bundchen shot these ads with a noticeable bun in the oven but um..her bump is mysteriously missing from the images which will be shown in a new campaign starting in October. Dari Marder, Chief Marketing Officer, explains:

"Although Gisele was photographed while pregnant, most of the shots have been retouched to respect her privacy during this wonderful and personal time in her life."

Seriously, since when has Gisele or Tom Brady, for that fact, every been worried about their privacy? She announced she was pregnant weeks ago!

London Fog = fail.

What's your excuse?

1. I am scared of needles / I am afraid to give blood...
Nearly everyone feels that way at first. However, most donors will tell you that you feel only a slight initial pinch, and 7-10 minutes later, you are finished and headed for the canteen. If you take the time (and courage) to make one donation, you'll wonder why you ever hesitated.

2. I am too busy...
The entire process takes about an hour, and the actual blood donation time is only 7-10 minutes. If you stop to think that an hour of your time could mean a lifetime for a premature baby, someone with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, or someone who's had an accident, you might decide that you can make the time to give the gift of life.

3. No-one ever asked me… I didn't realize my blood was needed
Consider yourself asked! There is simply no other way to supply the blood needs of hospital patients but for the generous donations of people like you. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood. More than 38,000 donations are needed every day in communities across the U.S.

4. I already gave this year
You can give every 56 days. Many donors give 5 times a year!

5. I am afraid I'll get AIDS
It is not possible to get AIDS by donating blood to the American Red Cross. A new sterile needle is used for each donor and discarded afterwards.

6. My blood isn't the right type
Every type of blood is needed daily to meet patient needs. If you have a common blood type, there are many patients who need it, so it is in high demand. If you have a less common blood type, there are fewer donors available to give it, so it is in short supply.

7. I don't have any blood to spare
The average adult body has 10-12 pints of blood. Doctors say that healthy adults may give regularly because the body quickly replaces the blood you donate.

8. I don't want to feel weak afterward
Donating blood should not affect adversely a healthy adult because your body has plenty of blood. You will donate less than one pint, and your body, which constantly makes new blood, will replace the donated volume within 24 hours. Most people continue their usual activities after donating.

9. They won't want my blood (I am too old / I've had an illness)
If you have doubts, check with your physician. The qualified staff on duty at a blood drive or donor center will also review your medical history with you. There is no upper age limit to donate blood with the American Red Cross, and a great many medical conditions do not prevent you from donating blood, or may have done so only temporarily in the past.

10. I have a rare blood type, so I'll wait until there is a special need.
Blood that is rare or special is almost always in short supply. There is a constant need for these blood types in order to avoid having to recruit specific blood types in a crisis

Please schedule your appointment to donate blood with FrederickMommies on August 8th 2009. If you're interested please contact Melinda@FrederickMommies.com.

Pregalates: Tash talks about the importance of exercise

Welcome to the first of many articles covering the issues of exercise during your pregnancy. There’s heaps of information out there, some of which can be conflicting and if you’re a first time mum, it can also be extremely daunting.

In my experience, the first thing people do when they find out they’re pregnant is start to worry about all the things they can’t do.

I’m suggesting that you turn that way of thinking around and focus on all the things you CAN do. Being pregnant isn’t a disease, women have been doing it for years all over the world and coping quite nicely thank you very much!

To drag your arse up to do anything when you’re pregnant is hard enough, but to drag your arse up to do exercise – get outta here!! Pregnancy is a time for sitting comfortably on the sofa with your feet firmly OFF the ground and your hand firmly IN a bag of chocolates…is it not?

Well, I’m here to try and convince you otherwise. I’m happy to share with you that nowadays, it’s widely accepted by midwives and GPs that exercising while you’re pregnant is more than just a good idea. It’s a way to keep body and mind focused on the job at hand – first class baby baking.

Stress hormones (or cortisol levels if we’re being technical) are heightened during pregnancy and as soon as you do any form of exercise, they get cancelled out with happy hormones (which can only be a good thing!).

Not only does exercise make you feel better emotionally, it also helps to reduce the likelihood of injury or those common complaints we all read about like back ache, water retention, sciatica (pain down the sides of your legs), difficulty sleeping, losing balance, weight gain….should I go on?

The first myth to dispel is that exercising whilst pregnant puts you or your baby at risk. Rubbish! (PROVIDING of course that you aren’t jumping out of planes or climbing bare rock faces unaided). It’s perfectly ok to start a new form of exercise and most people opt for pilates or yoga, swimming and walking. These activities are gentler than running or spin but still extremely effective.

Why you should consider exercising throughout your pregnancy:

• During labour you can concentrate on enjoying the process with the knowledge that your body isn’t going to give up on you
• Your body’s going to bounce back a helluva lot more quickly after all the fun’s over with
• You won’t feel as uncomfortable in your new body 24/7
• Varicose veins will be kept at bay
• Back ache will not raise its ugly head
• Water retention around the ankles will be something you associate ‘other’ people with.

I know what you’re thinking. “When am I supposed to find time to fit exercise into my day? I’m at work for 10 hours, asleep for 8 – I need to eat, wind down and relax.” By my calculations, that still leaves you with at least an hour when you’ve done all those other things, at least three times a week to do some exercise. I promise you (and I don’t promise things lightly, let me tell you 1) that your body, your pregnancy, your labour and your mind will all thank you for it in the long run and if you think you have no time BEFORE the baby arrives…..boy, are you in for a shock when it does finally grace you with its presence!!

I would love to hear from you! Email your questions about pregnancy exercise or anything else to tasha[at]pregalates.com

xx Tasha

Ikea: Breastfeeding not on the menu

All together now: "BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC IS LEGAL"

Hear that Ikea? I think you're looking at a boycott.

Mums of the month

The Rugby Breastfeeding Cafe, a Warwickshire-based support group where local mums can meet up to feed their babies and chat in peace, has found an innovative method for fundraising: a calendar featuring mums breastfeeding from all walks of life in order to 'challenge views people might have about breastfeeding'. A recent article in the Telegraph describes the photos as 'provocative'. Rosie Evans, 28, organised the calendar and says "It shows that you can be young, trendy and sexy and still be a breastfeeding mum."

I'm not so sure. While I'm all for empowering women to feel comfortable to breastfeed and to feel sexy when they are doing it, I think this premise is problematic. I get annoyed when people say that 'you can still be a mum (or breastfeed) and be sexy' as if the two things are always going to be mutually exclusive. Maybe I'm an idealist, but I just don't like the thought that mothers today will always have to worry about 'proving' that motherhood isn't the end of their sexual lives. While it can do nothing but good to get more images of women breastfeeding in daily life, at the same time, why should we have a calendar to prove that?

Thoughts?

*Interesting, the Rugby Breastfeeding Cafe has already complained about the tone of this post, apparently I'm not being supportive enough. I don't see any place here where I'm not being supportive of breastfeeding, of a woman's right to breastfeed in public or the breastfeeding support group.

If you read closely, my criticism is not about any of these things, it is about the over-sexualisation of women's bodies and the quite complex struggle women have in trying to negotiate being mothers and sexual beings in a culture that implores that women be sexy all of the time. I don't think publishing a calendar remedies this, sorry!

One of the organisers seems to suggest that I haven't talked to breastfeeding mums so somehow I just don't understand. If anything, I think I've built my academic career on talking to women about being mothers. I always try to be thoughtful and sensitive on this blog in between being funny with moments of smug every so often. I thought about deleting the post but changed by mind. This is an open forum, if you disagree with anything I have to say, you are most welcome to leave comments, as always. In saying that, this is an open forum for me too. It irks me that the person from the Rugby Breastfeeding Cafe that bothered to comment actually didnt provide a contact name or email address for me to respond to her directly and appropriately. I've removed the images that were originally posted (which I thought would be only be a boon for calendar sales or at least direct traffic to the site).

FrederickMommies teams up with American Red Cross

FrederickMommies is happy to announce that we are teaming up with the American Red Cross for our first Annual Blood Drive. We have established our location at the Frederick Church of the Brethren on 2nd Ave and Rosemont Ave. Our event will take place on Saturday, August 8th from 8am-1pm.

The staff and Charitable Events Committee Members have been busy scheduling appointments for the event. We have been lucky enough to have such a successful event the Red Cross has agreed to give us more staff to man the event and have in turn given us more time slots to fill. If you are eligible to give blood, please consider coming out and supporting FrederickMommies. If you personally can not donate please pass the information along to your family, friends and neighbors.

Please feel free to pass out the flier posted below (e-mail it to everyone on your distribution list, put it up in local coffee shops, etc.). Ben and Jerry's has graciously donated coupons for their Pint for Pint promotion this month. FrederickMommies will also have door prizes for participants including coupons for a free soda at Chick-Fil-A in Frederick. In addition to those fantastic motivations we will also have a children's area for the parents that have to bring their little ones along. We understand that sometime scheduling is an issue and we want to offer a family friendly event where you can be encouraged to come and donate. We will have people on hand to keep an eye on the children in our childrens area along with toys that are provided by the Dancing Bear in Frederick. Facepaint by Vicki and Friends will also be on hand to help keep the kids entertained with face painting. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful businesses that are willing to help make this event such a huge success.

Kendra Wilkinson: author?

I think Girl Next Door, Kendra Wilkinson is taking over my life.

Now, the pregnant former Playboy bunny is writing a memoir that will be published next summer.

According to Us, "The memoir will be a humorous, relatable, fish-out-of-water tale that captures the spirit of one of the most beloved Playboy cover models in history."

Just what the world needs.

I mean seriously, how on earth is she going to write a book? Has the publisher seen the rhetorical abortion that is her blog?

Wine Tasting MNI

First and foremost Thank you for planning this event Britt and Maya!!!!

I had a great time last night. I was able to meet a few new moms that I hadn't met before. The theme for the night was French wines. I have to say that I was bad and didn't bring a french wine but that was because I brought what I already had in the fridge. We shared a few bottles of wine, many laughs and DELICIOUS foods!

After a few bottles of wine we broke out Cranium (the board game). I have to say it was an interesting experience to play Cranium in between the giggles of slightly intoxicated mommas. Overall it was a ton of fun and everyone had a great time.
A few things that I learned last night:
-Angelgirl still comes out when Britt has had a little to drink.

-Monique has had the name Sho-ronnn-da since she was in college (the pronunciation of this is so much funnier in person). She is also an early bird that passes out around 9 so we kept her out way past curfew last night.

-Maya is far from the Irish girl that she sounds with the screen name mcmetni

-I really am a nerd and have nothing exciting or interesting to contribute other than coupon clipping tips (when did I become this person?)!

-Stephanie has a few liquor stores that she frequents--you know so that people don't think she's a drunk! ;)

-Marta has used her coupons that she clipped and was excited to announce that she saved $11 recently! YAY!

This event will be repeated in September at Britt's house. The theme for that night will be local wines. So, start thinking of a wine you'd like to bring. Note to self--find interesting things to talk about other than couponing! Really...when did I become so dull! :P

Birth behind bars

According to a recent report in the New York Times, there are still states that keep pregnant inmates shackled during labour and birth. In some cases, an inmates legs, wrists and even abdomen are chained, quite obviously making medical treatment difficult. Although the Federal Bureau of Prisons last fall called for an end to the practice except in cases where inmates are a danger to themselves or others, it is thought that some women are still shackled in spite of state regulations.

After birth, the treatment of new mothers is no better. Most prisons make no provisions for inmates to be with their newborns. Infants are typically taken away from the mother immediately and either sent to live with family members or placed in foster care. According to a 2000 report in Time, New York, Nebraska and Washington State are the only exceptions; prisons in these states have nurseries in which infants are allowed to live with their mothers for a year to 18 months. Understandably, it is debatable whether infants are better off living in prison at the most critical point in their little lives. There is a dearth of research regarding long-term psychological effects of prison life on children.

In New York, however, the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility opened the nation's first prison nursery 100 years ago, and today its parenting program has had dramatic results. Only 10% of women who successfully completed the program returned to prison, in contrast to 52% of inmates overall.

There is some hope for pregnant inmates. There are a number of organisations across the US that try to organise volunteer doulas (traditional birth attendants) to help to empower pregnant inmates. The Peace Tree Prison Doulas serve incarcerated women in North Carolina penitentaries. They offer two main services to these women; each week they facilitate a pregnancy, labor and postpartum discussion group based on the womens' interests and needs, as well as provide continuous birth doula support when inmates go into labor. After delivery, they provide continuous postpartum counseling and breastfeeding support.

How can we deny pregnant women their right to a safe birth?

Beach bump

Momma said there'd be days like this...

Did you guys see the mommy that was wearing 2 different shoes!? I know that we've all been there at least once where we've run out of the house in a hurry and didn't notice that we had 2 different socks on or that the shirt you were wearing wasn't as clean as you really thought. Well, today there was a mommy at the Firehouse that didn't realize she had on one brown and one black shoe! She has asked to remain annonymous but found the humor in the fact that she left the house in different shoes. Next time you have an embarassing moment just remember...You're not alone!

FM takes over the Carroll Manor Fire Department

Today the children of FrederickMommies took over the Carroll Manor Fire Department in Adamstown. Thank you to the firemen that we nice enough to talk to the kids, showed them their equipment, and let them climb all over the engines. We had a HUGE turn out. Evidently they were only expecting 11 kids as of yesterday to have more than 30 show up this morning.

We started the morning in their meeting area where they spoke to the kids about safety, how to dial 9-1-1 and then what a fireman looked like in his entire gear to prevent children becoming scared incase of an emergency! They ended it with the kids touching and exploring their gear.

Next we went outside where the kids were able to climb on all of the equipment. The kids were able to look in the engines, climb, pretend to steer, etc. This is always a favorite for the children as they explore and push buttons. The firemen were nice enough to turn on the siren and even flash the lights for the kids to see.

We want to thank all of the firemen at Carroll Manor for allowing us to come in today and to Brandi for setting this event up! Thank you to everyone that came out also!

Breast is not always best

I can feel a controversy brewing.

Joan Wolf, an American academic, examines the medical studies on breastfeeding in painstaking detail in her forthcoming book.

Her conclusion?

“The evidence to date suggests it probably doesn’t make much difference if you breastfeed.

And the many of the world's leading experts agree. While breastfeeding is beneficial for babies, some of its benefits have apparently been 'oversold' to new mothers. Wolf, herself a mother and one that did breastfeed her babies, says she was shocked by the information that she found. One of the major problems she says is that it is very hard to separate the benefits of the mother’s milk from the benefits of the kind of mother who chooses to breastfeed. In the UK, for example, the highest class of women are 60 per cent more likely to breastfeed than the lowest, so it is not surprising that research shows that breastfed infants display all the health and educational benefits they were born into. In effect, breastfeeding studies could simply be showing what it’s like to grow up in a family that makes an effort to be healthy and responsible, as opposed to anything positive in breast milk.

Michael Kramer, professor of paediatrics at McGill University, Montreal agrees. He has advised the World Health Organisation, Unicef and the esteemed scientific body, the Cochrane Library, and been conducting research into the health effects of breastfeeding since 1978. “The public health breastfeeding promotion information is way out of date,” Kramer says. The trouble is, he said, that the breastfeeding lobby is at war with the formula milk industry, and “neither side is being very scientific ... when it becomes a crusade, people are not very rational.”

I'm in love...

with my new family photos that is! Last weekend my family participated in the FrederickMommies summer photo fundraiser and I have to say that I love my pictures. The amazing Britt volunteers as our photographer for these events. I asked my mom, step-dad, sister and her boyfriend to join us so that we could update our family photos. We ran all over the park to get the best shots and have the amazing backdrop that they park offers. Each session is offered for 15 minutes for $15 and it was such a deal. I opted to purchase 2 sittings so that we could do our extended family and then my immediate family to ensure we had enough time.

Check out some of my favorites from that day.

Letterboxing Event

Oh my goodness, this was a great event today! Don't get me wrong...it was HOT, sticky and the kids were taking turns melting down but overall it is something that seems like TONS of fun. While I don't like the park, the heat or hiking, I still managed to drag myself to the event (20 minutes late albeit, but I still went) for my son. I knew that it was something he would enjoy. I know that Stephanie (like myself) is far from the outdoors girl and she had a good time too--for the sake of her son also. The kids loved looking for the boxes (aka treasure) and stamping their books.

For those of you unsure of what letterboxing is: LETTERBOXING is an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming "treasure hunt" style outdoor quest. A wide variety of adventures can be found to suit all ages and experience levels.
Here is a great site to get started if you're interested in taking your kids out: http://www.letterboxing.org/

Thank you Melinda G. for introducing us to this fun family event. We really did have a great time and I am looking forward to doing this again...once it's not 90+ degrees, muggy and raining! ;)

Not Meeting Notes

What I learned from FM this week...

Becky sees "a little Dan" in Melinda's baby. Things that make you go hmmmm.. Oh wait... not THAT Dan!

Melinda and I are Lollipop Guild members, and thereby responsible for the Lollipop tree. Rocket science color coding required.

3 mommies + 1 candy apple red convertible = - 15 years.

"WTH? I thought that was lemonade! Gimme that pitcher!"

Rats the size of small sheep do exist!

It takes longer to drive home than to walk the 1/4 mile thru the neighborhood.

Other thoughts...

Today we enjoyed a sticky hot gathering at Baker Park where we held a book swap. True FM awesomeness was conveyed by the positioning of the very large FM banner draped across the book table. This thing is a good idea, we should carry it everywhere! I guess that means Elizabeth has to be at ALL events. In any case, I think I left with as many books as I brought with me but I did make some excellent exchanges. I scored a gorgeous photo/memory book as well as a book with ideas on making family memories. The challenge grows greater with each passing year as my children age. Its in interesting dynamic to parent toddlers and teenagers at the same time.

I just want to say also that the main facet of FM that I really appreciate is the diversity among mothering styles we represent. I have been a mother for close to 20 years but knowing these ladies has really opened my eyes and my heart to some new things. For example, I love how Melinda G never seems to get too overwhelmed with the needs of her multiple aged children. And I love how Britt is so easy going with most things but is a total mama bear when it comes to her pretty little cubs. I love how Hillary is so funny and hasn't let motherhood make her stern! I could go on and on.

Love you guys!

Swiney

Preggos: Beware the swine!*

SWINEY!

Seriously, is anyone out there wearing a mask in public? Considering there are 'stylish maternity sickness vomit bags', why hasn't some bright spark started making pregnancy specific swiney masks with pictures of little foetuses covering their mouths?

*Yes, I know swiney is deadly for pregnant women in some cases. But it's Friday, and I'm having a bit of fun.
