BBP resolves to have head no longer in sand

Geez..has it been this long? A new year and a renewed commitment to blogging as my new years resolution. For those of you who have been wondering where I have been, well, I've been traveling around the world on a much needed holiday after a wild and wonderful year of research and teaching.
I have returned to the world of pregnancy to relish in the thought of supermodel Miranda Kerr pushing out a 10lb baby, Kate Hudson carrying the love child of a rockstar, Natalie Portman announcing her pregnancy in the midst of her publicity tour for Black Swan in which she plays a ballerina gone mad and Kelly Preston and John Travolta presenting their new son Benjamin to the world via the most relevant news source, People magazine.
When it comes to parenthood, what are your resolutions for 2011?

Expensive babies.

The $15 million cover photo...enough said. People just released the photos and the website has been counting down for the last three days. Zoiks.

Elizabeth Hasselback post-baby in a bikini

Elizabeth Hasselback is back in action on the cover of Fitness just six months since birthing her second baby. According to the former View host:

"I finally told myself ... 'I've got some curves, I've got a bubble butt, but I don't mind, because it's what powers me forward when I run.' "

In order to get back into shape, Hasselback worked out intensely for six weeks with a wheat-free diet because apparently "her goal wasn't to lose weight she just wanted to eat healthier and have more energy."
Clearly. Working out hardcore for six weeks had nothing to do with the fact that she would be appearing in a bikini on a magazine.

J.Lo babies revealed

If you've been eagerly anticipating a glimpse at J.Lo's twin babies, prepare yourself. On Thursday, People magazine will reveal the new mum and her babies on the cover along with inside info on how J.Lo is managing as a mother.

People editor, Peter Casto, says that J.Lo gained 45 to 50 pounds during her pregnancy but that she doesn't mind the weight gain at all (hmm...not so sure about that):

"She wanted to do that because she had twins and she wanted to get those twins big. And they were almost 6 pounds when they were born. And right now, yes, she's lost a lot of the weight, but she is no rush to lose all of it. She is enjoying motherhood and that is what she is concentrating on".

And apparently, even though the couple has 2 baby nurses, 'they do alot of the work themselves'.

J.Lo and her baby divas

According to Fametastic, Jennifer Lopez is spoiling her new babies like she would herself. After hiring a colour therapist during her pregnancy to help her design the most soothing nursery for the twins, now that the babies have arrived, not only do they have an entire wing all to themselves but they have classical music piped into their room to keep the peace. J.Lo has hired a baby masseuse to come in a few times a week to ease the babies tired muscles and she has insisted on a totally sterile environment in the nursery.

So if you're still planning to send her a baby gift, it will most likely be de-contaminated before it makes it anywhere near the babies.

Nicole and Harlow working it for People

*Yawn* Another celebrity who gives birth and talks about it.

I bet I can summarise the article:

'Motherhood is amazing. Blah Blah Blah. I'm not worried about losing weight (yeah, right). Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah'

Uterus news

Word on the street has it that Angelina Jolie is looking to 'sell' her twin pregnancy story to the highest bidder. Christina Aguilera is set to make $1.5 million from Ok! for the first photos of her son and Nicole Richie is to earn $1 million for photos of Harlow.

An open letter to all of the celebrities who are pregnant or are thinking about getting pregnant anytime soon:

As part of the tabloid reading public, I am sick and tired of you farming out the contents of your uteruses to the global media for millions of dollars before your belly even starts to have a hint of swell. Sure, you say, it's all going to charity, you're doing this 'for the children', blah blah blah. Wake up and smell the new millenium. Everyone loves a good baby cover story but don't you think selling your baby's image before he/she even develops the ability to hold their head upright is just wrong?

You complain that the paparazzi are constantly following you; that you can't go out to the supermarket without having your photo taken; that you feel like a prisoner of your fame and fortune. Yet, you sell the most private moments of your 'perfect' family to every gossip-loving mag hag in the free world! Since when did motherhood become an opportunity to make a cool mill? Has the new baby cover shot become a replacement for paid maternity leave?

Let's face it. Just because you are a celebrity, doesn't mean that motherhood won't be overwhelming. Sure you have nannies and drivers and trainers to help you 'bounce' back but fame will not save you from the baby blues, or even worse postnatal depression or feeling like the person you were before baby is lost forever. Seeing you pose on the magazine covers, so sweet and 'happy' with your 'motherhood is amazing'-isms makes my teeth hurt because any mother will tell you (and you probably know this already), motherhood changes you forever and it's not an easy ride. So forget about posing and preening for the camera. Save your baby's retinas from the blinding camera flashbulbs and just be a mother out of the spotlight. Your children will thank you for it some day.

Halle Berry: blah blah blah

Excuse my cynicism but I find Halle Berry's constant glowing exhortations about how magnificent it is to be pregnant a bit unsettling (almost as unsettling as the relentless surveillance of J.Lo's womb). Surely, she is excited to be having a baby. That's great. However, I find this recent comment from People absolutely ridiculous:

"There's no bad," the Oscar winner, 41, said Sunday at a press gathering for her new movie, Things We Lost in the Fire, which opens Oct. 19. "There is nothing bad about it. The morning sickness and the vomiting and the hot sweats. Nothing's been bad about it. I've loved every second of it," she said.

Find me a woman that loves to puke without warning and I'll start to believe that there's nothing 'bad' (or at least marginally inconvenient) about being pregnant. It is one thing to be completely 'over the moon' (cringe!) with the idea of becoming a mother. It is another thng entirely to suggest that the physical signs of pregnancy are not at all inconvenient as if Berry is so worried about being perceived as a selfless, 'good' mother she could never even admit that some physical aspects of pregnancy can be wonderful and even (shock! horror!) terrible. I am yet to find a woman (in my research or otherwise) who has 'loved' every physical experience associated with pregnancy (particularly the more unpleasant ones). Seriously, it's like saying that a Brazillian wax doesn't hurt or slamming your hand in a car door is fun and you would do it again.

Even though I'm sure Berry never intended someone like me to read so deeply into her verbal diarrhea, I think this sort of statement reinforces the idea that women must be pregnant (physically, psychologically and emotionally) selflessly; that they must embody 'goodness' at all costs and never 'complain' like obedient little women. It does not do justice to the enormous physical burden (that's right, i said 'burden'..I think housing another human for 9 months and then pushing it out is physically taxing...and I doubt many women would argue) women endure. Pregnancy is like having a full-time job in addition to the full-time paid work most women do daily except being pregnant (or being a mother) is not recognised or valued as 'work'.

Berry actually contradicts her image of 'goodness' or 'selflessness' later in this particular article by saying:

"I crave things daily. It changes every day, and I try to listen to my body and not overdo it so I don't become too big."

Clearly, 'bigness' or 'fatness' are negative aspects of pregnancy for Berry. Women are not supposed to take up too much space. Whereas vomitting and nausea associated with pregnancy are constructed as being out of a woman's control in early pregnancy, eating and body size are perceived as being within her control. Becoming 'too big' for Berry would suggest that she is not a mother that is in control of her body or her life. Berry does not identify her fear of fat as something particularly negative because women are supposed to be consumed with thinness and body size. Of course, Berry doesn't want to get too 'fat'. That's just part of being a 'woman'.
