Monday news roundup:
The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada says a C-section should not be offered to a pregnant woman unless there is a valid medical reason to perform one. But, a University of British Columbia study found that 2 per cent of obstetricians were in favour of a woman's right to choose a C-section for herself, even in the absence of a medical indication.
Speaking of caesars, Charlotte Church says giving birth naturally was pretty rough: "It's absolutely, disgustingly horrendous. It's shocking I tell you that. I had both babies at home, two home births, just with gas and air. It was horrendous. I mean it was amazing and awesome and crazily whatever, a completely different experience but you know, I might do it again because I'm a little bit of a sadist that way."
Over in supermodel preggo land, the maternity style wars were on as Heidi Klum and Gisele Bundchen tooled around town with their bumps in all their glory
In case you missed it, Shiloh Pitt, 3, lost her front tooth. This has prompted such heated internet discussion, forcing Brangelina to issue a press release answering questions about the obvious gap in Shiloh's smile. Most people think Shiloh is too young to start losing teeth, so most of the web is settled on the idea that Zahara either clocked her in the face or she has been eating skittles for breakfast.
Speaking of half-pint celebs, Suri Cruise is not only a style maven for other three year olds, her mother, Katie Holmes points to Suri as her inspiration for her new fashion line she is launching with her stylist Jeanne Yang: "It has been my dream forever to be in fashion and I'm truly inspired by my daughter Suri. She just loves dressing up so I decided to launch this exciting venture with Jeanne." Um, let's just hope that her new line doesn't include sparkly shell shaped handbags or kitten heels.
Oh, and Nicole Richie has snapped back into her size zeros in just under 2 weeks. Ho Hum.

Nicole Richie: maternity designer?

Nicole Richie is now a maternity designer. She talked to PEOPLE exclusively about the new line for A Pea in the Pod, explaining that the collaboration works because “Pea in the Pod is such a known company for pregnant women. They carry great lines, and so when they asked me to create a line for them, I was really excited and eager to do it.” The collection hits stores on Friday.
Nicole Richie with child
*drum roll please*
Nicole Richie is pregnant with her second child. Joel Madden announced the news on the Good Charlotte website in a message titled “Better than winning an OSCAR!,” he wrote on Saturday night, “I am so happy to tell everyone that Harlow is going to be a big sister! God has truly blessed my family. Hope your [sic] all feeling as good as I am right now.”
We can all look forward to another year of baby bump scouting, maternity fashion and Paris Hilton saying she wants to be pregnant too.

Nicole Richie: the next maternity designer?
So Nicole Richie wants to launch a maternity line. *Yawn*
"My line will be about making women look and feel good at a really emotional time. It's about showing your best self, not your tired, worn-down self," Richie said.
This annoys me. There is already too much pressure to be perfect when you're pregnant, aside from what clothes you are wearing. The idea that being 'worn down' is something women should hide is ridiculous. Celebrities have no place telling women what they should be wearing or how they should 'do' pregnancy because they have categorically different experiences. Most pregnant women actually do not want to spend alot of money on clothing that is only going to see them through a few months. Let's face it, being 'worn down' is part and parcel of the experience and there is no amount of clothing or money one can spend to get around the fact that when you are housing another human, it's alot of work.
Bah!

Nicole not a fan of her improved bust

Any woman that has been pregnant is familiar with 'pregnancy boobs'; the much enhanced cleavage that is so often a blessing for a man in a pregnant woman's life but not always so welcome for the woman who feels like her chest is growing almost as fast as her baby bump.
Nicole Richie and Christina Aguilera have received quite a bit of attention for their post-baby breasts. In fact, as soon as Christina and Nicole made their post-baby debuts, the media interest centred right around their new bust friends.
Nicole has opened up about her post-baby breasts:
"He (Joel) likes it! It doesn't really fit with my wardrobe, it's not who I am. I am not someone who is used to wearing a bra or having to wear a bra, I really don't like it.
"I like wearing vintage hippy see-through shirts that aren't slutty on me because there is nothing to look at. Now I have boobs so I can't really wear it because it sends out a different message."
An honest and interesting comment. For someone like Nicole who has had much smaller breasts pre-pregnancy it is easy to see why having a cultural gaze focused on her much larger breasts as a mother is uncomfortable. This is also fascinating because for most women that I've spoken to in my study, breasts become extremely un-erotic post-birth, meaning that some women feel like their breasts feel like tools to feed a baby and not necessarily the sexual objects they were pre-pregnancy. Breasts are for the baby and not for the partner. However, to the public spectator, calling on sexualised images of women in pop culture, large breasts = sexy. Clearly a sort of bodily contradiction for post-baby mums who have fantastic cleavage but aren't feeling like having the world stare at their boobs.
Nicole's body does clearly look different but not being able to wear her normal clothes is less an issue of fashion and more a realisation that her identity has changed. She is a mother and her body has changed as well to support a baby.
Nicole and Harlow working it for People

*Yawn* Another celebrity who gives birth and talks about it.
I bet I can summarise the article:
'Motherhood is amazing. Blah Blah Blah. I'm not worried about losing weight (yeah, right). Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah'

Pregnancy is apparently a 'medical condition'
"Mom-to-be Nicole Ritchie has been granted a leave of absence from her court-mandated anti-drinking program, her rep confirms to People. The program suggested the Simple Life star take a leave because they were worried for her safety, according to her rep. "They offer that option to anyone with a medical condition of any kind," the rep says. "She is not receiving special treatment.""
They are worried about her 'safety'? Interesting.
1) Why is pregnancy considered a medical condition? I thought we were sitting comfortably in an era where pregnancy is sexy and glamourous and definitely not a condition to be hidden or represented as 'clinical' in popular culture.
2) How does being pregnant hinder Nicole from going to counselling or sitting in a class room for drug/alcohol education? Wouldn't you think that have a mother-to-be with a demonstrated history of drug/alcohol abuse and who has served time in jail would benefit from some preventive measures to keep her from re-indulging in old habits?

Beverly Hills, baby.
So I've been in LA for the past two days. My purpose in being here was to be interviewed for this Canadian documentary called 'Celebrity Babies' airing some time next year. Been staying in Beverly Hills in some pretty fabulous digs and I have to admit, on more than one occasion I was secretly hoping to run in to Nicole Richie in the Beverly Centre. We did the shoot last night and the crew was great and I got to talk about a few of my favourite things: pregnancy, celebrity, and Britney Spears.
But alas, as my time here has been short and after one too many 'I'm in LA' celebration drinks with a good mate, I'm on my way back to Chicago with no celebrity sightings. However, I did hear through the grapevine that Britney ran three stop signs yesterday on Rodeo. Where am I when all of the good stuff happens?
Anyway.. Nicole Richie appeared on Access Hollywood last night talking to Billy Bush about her pregnancy and how it has made her feel closer to her parents, particularly her biological mother with whom she has been estranged from some time. When asked about whether she and Joel will be getting married as well, Richie said she needed to wait for that..too many things happening in one year. I found this particularly intriguing as I've been doing some research for this article I'm writing about pregnant brides. At some stage last year, I distinctly remember Nicole saying she didn't want to be 'fat' and pregnant on her wedding day. Speaking of, if any of you out there were pregnant at your wedding..please email me!

Nicole's baby weight drama
Even though everyone seems to think that Nicole Richie is happy to be gaining weight and 'indulging her cravings' in pregnancy, it seems that Richie is less than pleased with all of the weight she has packed on. According to one source, she has hired celebrity personal trainer, Harley Pasternak, to work with her immediately following the birth. A source close to Nicole says:
"Nicole feels huge right now. Her breasts are enormous and she finds it difficult to get comfortable. The change to her body has been drastic and it's been hard for Nicole to accept. She looks in the mirror and doesn't even recognise the person staring back at her."
Apparently, Joel Madden is distressed that Nicole has made plans to lose her baby weight so quickly, urging her to wait until at least March before she starts a diet/exercise regimen. Nicole would like to get start training 2 weeks from the birth.
I haven't read this story anywhere else so I hesitate to accept it as 'truth', however, it surprises me that more stories like this haven't been written up until now considering Nicole has a history of disordered eating (as far as we have been able to tell given her weight fluctuations). As I said in the last post, everyone has written about her so positively especially surrounding food and weight gain, it only makes sense that someone who has (allegedly) been anorexic would be a bit freaked out with the prospect of gaining weight and obsess about losing the weight as well. It will be interesting to see what Nicole does post-birth; if she loses the weight immediately will the media treat her like a hero and a 'yummy mummy' or will she be labeled a selfish, 'bad' mother for caring too much about her appearance?

Nicole Richie indulges her 'cravings'
So I'm back to being American for the next month...and what better way to celebrate my renewed American-ness than a post about Nicole Richie 'indulging her cravings'.According to the Daily Mail, Nicole Richie was spotted in New York eating pizza. I won't go into what I think about pregnancy 'cravings' as I've already written about that before: http://babybumpproject.blogspot.com/2007/10/more-more-more-milla-j-are-cravings.html
However, I do find it interesting that Nicole is constantly praised for eating, considering her shocking thinness pre-pregnancy. Nicole, at 7 months pregnant, is described 'blooming' and not 'fat'. If the same story had been written about Britney Spears, undoubtedly, the tone of the story would have been 'Look at Britney eating pizza. She's a fat pig'. Richie, on the other hand, is represented as the 'good' mother looking after the health of her baby.
