Us magazine has a created a slideshow documenting the 'evolution' of Nicole Ritchie's baby bump. Considering how thin she was, Ritchie's bodily transformation is pretty unbelievable.

Nicole v. Britney: baring their lady lumps

Due to popular demand (okay, 1 reader), I am going to talk about Nicole Ritchie and her bump. I've been avoiding it for a very long time now (as you might have noticed) but I thought this would be a good opportunity to say a few things about baby bumps and bikinis. Up until recently, being pregnant and wearing a bikini was simply not on. Sure, you're probably thinking...ever since Demi Moore pregnancy is sexy! Women can be out and proud with their bumps...In reality, however, the exposure of the bump is still a bit taboo outside of Hollywood even though maternity fashion is tighter, a bit more low-rise and definitely low-cut. Wearing a bikini during pregnancy especially challenges conventional boundaries between the feminine body and the external world where the male gaze dictates the norms for feminine beauty, body shape and comportment. This is what led me to my thought about Nicole Ritchie. I am really surprised not to find crazy rants about how 'obscene' it is that a pregnant woman is wearing a string bikini when only a few years ago people went nuts over pictures of Britney Spears sporting the same duds (or lack thereof...) in the picture above in 2005 and again in 2006. Her body was described as grotesque: words such as 'fat' and 'gross' were used with reckless abandon along with suggestions that at almost 9 months pregnant no one wanted to see Britney's big 'fat' stomach.
Fast forward to Nicole Ritchie and her beach attire this week. According to all the newspaper articles from the past few days, Ritchie looks 'amazing', 'sexy' and everyone seems to be pleased that she is happily 'flaunting' her baby belly. There has been no mention of 'fat' or 'gross'.
So how can we explain these seemingly contradictory positions regarding the exposure of the bump?
One one hand, I'd like to think that the world is getting a little less conservative when it comes to the representation of pregnancy. However, I think that is giving a bit too much credit to progressive thinking. My feeling is that the way that these bikini-clad pregnant bodies are depicted in the media all comes down to celebrity status. As everyone knows, Britney Spears is public enemy #1 when it comes to motherhood. No matter what she does, Britney will eternally be known as the world's worst mother in the media. Nicole Ritchie, on the other hand, has garnered an inordinate amount of sympathy because of her 1) alleged eating disorder 2) her run-in with the law 3) her jail time.
Ritchie's pregnancy has completely changed her celebrity status. Since falling pregnant she has vowed that her life has totally changed; she wants to be a good mother, she is planning to get married and she has changed all of her previously 'bad' lifestyle habits to protect her baby. Therefore, her position as a 'good' mother in pregnancy is reflected in the comments about her body. Pregnancy is seemingly more beautiful and glorious and celebrated when the pregnant woman is seen to be a 'good' mother. Britney's body, on the other hand, is represented as 'unfit' and 'fat' because she is a 'bad' mother. Moreover, Spears’ image as a ‘sexy mother’ (unlike Nicole) suggests the ‘anti-mother’, in her physical subversion of cultural mores that make women sexless ‘good mothers’ who are completely focused on the well-being of the fetus. Britney is never depicted as actually caring about her children: she is irresponsible when she is pregnant and when she is not pregnant. Nicole's body can be 'sexy' because her behaviour marks her as a 'good' mother and this is tied to her willingness to set aside her desire to be thin and instead she has embraced a maternal, more feminine body.
Paris Hilton: knocked up by next year?
Paris Hilton is in the mood.
For babies that is. Nicole Ritchie has done a complete 180 since the announcement of her pregnancy and despite the fact that she was on drugs and starving, now that she is approaching motherhood, the pregnancy glow has done wonders for her media image. Apparently Paris thinks pregnancy can turn her life around too.
She is 'preparing her body for motherhood' and according to a 'source' said:
'I want lots of babies and a more simple life away from the celebrity spotlight. I did a lot of soul-searching about my partying and then I heard Nicole was pregnant and I decided it's time for me to grow up and take responsibility - and the best way to do that is to become a mother.' "
Who knows if she actually said this but since when did motherhood become the easy answer?
Mother does not equal Madonna. All we need now is for Lindsay Lohan to announce that she's in the family way and all three jail birds can share their sordid tales of sex, drugs and rock-a-bye baby.

Jail is the new pregnant
I love the Huffington Post. When I read this, I seriously laughed out loud.

I'm a hypocrite. So sue me: Another Nicole Ritchie post
So yeah. Maybe a few days ago I said how annoyed I was that everyone and their mother was expending way too much brain power on the pregnancy of Nicole Ritchie. However, I am finding myself uncomfortably fascinated by her publicists' ability to manufacture answers for her to the 'hard-hitting' Diane Sawyer questions that continually repeat she has 'never had an eating disorder' (because after all, you would have to be eating at some stage to have one) and that she was never 'close to death'. So even though Nicole was pushing more drugs than Corey Haim, revealing an eating disorder is ostensibly much worse for her career.
"I eat all the time, especially now. I'm constantly hungry. I'm eating at least every hour," she said. "And just like any mother, you want to take the best care of yourself, especially while you're pregnant. I'm definitely eating healthier now."
With pregnancy comes weight gain and Richie says she's prepared for it, saying she has already gained 10 pounds. "It's what my baby needs and to me, numbers don't mean anything. If I gain 40 pounds, if I gain 50 pounds, then that's obviously what my body needs to do. I'm totally OK with that," she said.
Ritchie is quite possibly more vacuous than Paris Hilton. Why she deserves a three part series on the state of her health on American television really astounds me (and of course I continue to be a part of her media campaign by continuing to write about her. For shame!).

Nicole Ritchie is pregnant. Is anyone surprised?
As I scanned Google News as I do most mornings, I just happened to notice that there were no less than 503 articles devoted to the exoskeleton that is Nicole Ritchie and her starving fetus. Now that (in the immortal words of Carrie Bradshaw) the 'idiot stick figure with no soul' is on her way to motherhood (and jail), gird yourself ladies, every magazine cover, newspaper article and internet gossip site will waste words on her every movement, on her pleas for people to give her a 'fresh start' and for her to wax vomitous on the joys of being pregnant. If anything, Nicole will be constantly surveilled (not unlike other celebrities, but in an even more unsettling, all pervasive kind of way): everyone will question how much she is eating, whether she is gaining any weight and how quickly she 'bounces back' (as if there is anything to 'bounce back' to).
I suppose I could give her the benefit of the doubt and say that she made some mistakes and now she is paying for them, however, what really gets me fired up is that all of these young successful women (the Paris Hiltons of the world) do really stupid things and every decides to forget about their idiocy. In Ritchie's case, now that she is officially pregnant (4 months to be precise--could have fooled me!), no one is questioning her devotion to becoming a mother. Since when did motherhood become the easy way out? And who would have thought Nicole's vanishing body could actually sustain another life when she can barely sustain her own?

Nicole Ritchie does a 'Paris': preggers and off to jail
How in the world did Nicole Ritchie get knocked up?

Is anyone else confused? How does a girl (and I call her a girl because she looks like one) who fluctuates between 38-45 kilos become pregnant? Surely, Nicole isn't having regular periods!
Women who are very underweight before they become pregnant are 72% more likely to miscarry in the first three months of pregnancy. Given that Ritchie has a sort of sketchy history with eating disorders, I wonder how she will cope with the inevitable weight gain associated with pregnancy. In my own research, I have found that women who have long-standing obsessions with their body weight pre-pregnancy find it very challenging to grow bigger in pregnancy. In more extreme cases, such intense bodily dissatisfaction can lead to antenatal or postnatal depression.
According to the American Pregnancy Association, eating disorders that are not looked after properly during pregnancy can lead to:
Premature labor
Low birth weight
Stillbirth or fetal death
Likelihood of Cesarean birth
Delayed fetal growth
Respiratory problems
Gestational diabetes
Complications during labor
Depression

Miscarriage
Preeclampsia
Let's hope Nicole can make it through safely (if she is indeed pregnant and not avoiding jail time!)
